Counters on a Military and Shipyard Calendar
Countertops in Newport News often come with a deadline attached. The city's two largest employers are Newport News Shipbuilding, with over 24,000 employees, and Fort Eustis, with over 10,000 workers, so a lot of kitchen projects here are timed to a report date, a sale before a PCS move or a rental turnover between tenants. We plan the job backward from the date that matters to you, so the template, fabrication and install happen in the right order and the sink is working again before the moving truck arrives.
Owners, landlords and the half-and-half split
Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 put the owner-occupied rate in Newport News at 48.2%, which means more than half of homes are rented. That shapes what makes sense for each kitchen. Owners staying put often want a quartz kitchen they will enjoy for years. Landlords and owners getting ready to rent the house out while stationed elsewhere usually want durable, stain-resistant surfaces that look good in listing photos and hold up to a series of tenants. Both are reasonable goals, and the material choice follows from which one you have.
What we install
- Quartz countertops, a low-upkeep surface for kitchens and baths that need low upkeep
- Granite countertops for buyers who want natural stone with visible movement
- Kitchen countertop replacement that removes old laminate or tile and sets new tops on existing cabinets
- Bathroom vanity tops, single or double, with undermount sinks
- Quartzite and marble for owners who want a natural look and accept more care
- Outdoor kitchen countertops for patios and grill stations
Hilton Village, the North End and older houses
Newport News has notable early planned housing. Hilton Village was built as a government-planned community for shipyard workers during and just after World War I, with 473 homes in English village styles, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 23, 1969. The North End, also called Huntington Heights, was developed mostly from 1900 to 1935 and is also on the National Register. Kitchens in houses that age rarely have perfectly square walls or level floors. We template every run on site and scribe the backsplash edge so the new top fits the walls you actually have, not the ones on a drawing.
Humid summers and a cabinet check first
The city has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and about 45.44 inches of precipitation a year. Quartz itself does not mind humidity, but the cabinets under it can. Before we quote a stone top, we look for swollen particleboard near the sink and dishwasher, because a heavy slab needs a solid, level base. If a cabinet needs repair, we tell you at the estimate instead of discovering it on install day.
Timing a PCS move
If you are selling before orders take effect, give us the closing or pack-out date at the first call. A typical sequence is a measure, a few days to a couple of weeks for fabrication depending on material, then an install day, with plumbing reconnection after the tops are set. Natural stone that has to be selected by slab may add time. We will tell you honestly whether your date is realistic.

Newport News at a Glance
- Two very large employers. Newport News Shipbuilding is the city's largest employer with over 24,000 employees, and Fort Eustis is second with over 10,000 workers. Fort Eustis merged with Langley Air Force Base on October 1, 2010 to form Joint Base Langley-Eustis.
- More renters than owners. About 48.2% of homes are owner-occupied, the median owner-occupied home value is $260,600, and the city counts 17,365 veterans (Census ACS, 2020 to 2024).
- Century-old planned housing. Hilton Village, the first government-built planned community, has 473 homes built between 1918 and 1920 in Tudor Revival, Dutch Colonial Revival and Colonial Revival styles, and was listed on the National Register on June 23, 1969.
- A city that is 42% water. Newport News covers 119.62 square miles, of which 50.63 square miles is water. It sits on the north shore of the James River where it meets the Hampton Roads harbor, at an elevation of about 15 feet.

Newport News Questions
Can you finish a countertop job before my PCS pack-out date?
Often, yes, if we know the date early. Tell us your pack-out or closing date at the first call. Quartz in a stocked color usually moves faster than a natural stone slab you need to pick in person, so if the schedule is tight, we will say which options fit it.
What countertop makes sense for a house I plan to rent out while stationed elsewhere?
Quartz is a common pick for rentals because it does not need sealing and resists stains from tenants who may not know how to care for stone. A simple edge and a mid-tone color hide everyday wear better than a very dark or very white top.
My Hilton Village kitchen has uneven walls. Will a stone top fit?
Yes. Houses built around 1918 to 1920 seldom have square corners. We template on site after the old tops come off and fabricate to that template, then scribe the backsplash so gaps along the wall stay tight.
Is Newport News far from Chesapeake for you?
We serve the Peninsula as well as the Southside. We group measure and install days so travel across the water does not slow your project down.
