Replacing Kitchen Counters Without a Full Remodel
Kitchen countertop replacement is often a cost-effective upgrade for Chesapeake kitchens. If your cabinets are solid and the layout works, new counters change the room without the cost and weeks of a full remodel. We remove the old tops, check what is underneath, template, and install new quartz, granite or natural stone on your existing cabinets.
What we find under old counters
Chesapeake's housing stock reflects six decades of growth since the 1963 merger, and each era leaves its own surprises. Laminate tops from the 1970s and 1980s are often glued and screwed to the cabinets and may sit on a particleboard substrate that has absorbed water around the sink. Tile counters from the 1990s may have a mortar bed that adds height and weight. Early granite installs sometimes rest on shims that have shifted. Once the old top is off, we check that the cabinet tops are level, solid and dry, and fix minor leveling with shims before templating.
Can my cabinets take stone?
Most standard base cabinets in good condition can carry 3 cm quartz or granite. The weak points are sink bases that have been wet, cabinets that are not fastened to the wall or each other, and long spans over a dishwasher. If a sink base has swollen or delaminated from a leak, it is better to replace or reinforce it before a slab goes on it than to discover the problem after a seam opens.
Sinks, faucets and cooktops
A new stone top usually means a new sink style. Many people move from a drop-in sink to an undermount, which is cleaner to wipe into. We disconnect the existing sink and faucet, then reconnect them in the same location after install. Cooktop and sink cutouts are sized to the actual fixtures, so have the new sink and faucet on hand (or chosen) by the template visit. Angi's 2026 granite guide lists a sink cutout around $100 and a cooktop cutout around $200; quartz cutouts run $150 to $300 each.
When permits come into it
Replacing counters and reconnecting a sink or faucet in place is generally treated as cosmetic work under Virginia's Uniform Statewide Building Code: the code exempts cabinetry and the replacement of plumbing fixtures where the supply and drain systems are not altered. Moving the sink to an island, adding a pot filler or ice maker line, or running new circuits for an island outlet changes the plumbing or wiring, and that work requires permits and inspections. Confirm the details for your address with the City of Chesapeake. Angi puts plumbing alterations during a countertop job at $350 to $2,000. If your plan includes any of this, we list it separately in the quote and schedule around the permit.
Timeline
After the estimate there are two visits: templating and installation. Fabrication happens in between. The kitchen stays usable between visits. On install day, the old tops come off and the new ones go in, typically in one day for a standard kitchen. The faucet can be used again once the sink adhesive and caulk have cured.
Replacing counters before a move
For households selling or renting out a home ahead of a PCS move, a countertop replacement is one of the most visible changes in listing photos. Let us know your report date or listing date and we will build the schedule backward from it.

Kitchen Countertop Replacement Questions
How long does kitchen countertop replacement take?
There are two visits after the estimate: templating and install, with fabrication in between. Install day is usually a single day for a standard kitchen. Plumbing moves or permits add time.
Can I keep my cabinets?
Usually, if they are solid, level and dry. We check the sink base for water damage and confirm the cabinets can carry stone before we template.
Do I need a new sink?
Not always, but an undermount sink with a stone top is popular. The cutout is made to the exact sink, so choose it before templating.
Will my backsplash tile come off?
Often the bottom row of tile is damaged when old counters come out, especially tile set on a laminate backsplash. We will tell you at the estimate whether that is likely so you can plan for it.
