Granite: Heat-Tolerant and One of a Kind
Granite countertops are cut from quarried blocks of igneous rock, polished and finished to fit your kitchen. No two slabs match, and that is the appeal: movement, flecks and color that a factory cannot reproduce. Granite also tolerates heat far better than engineered quartz, which makes it a good fit for serious cooks and for counters next to a range. Many Chesapeake homes built in the 1990s and 2000s already have granite, and many owners are now replacing an early, busy-patterned stone with a calmer slab.
Picking a slab, not a sample
Because granite varies within a single color name, the small sample you see first is only a starting point. You should see the actual slab, or full-slab photos of it, before it is cut. We look at where the veins and color changes fall and plan the cuts so the pattern flows across seams and around the sink. Darker and rarer stones cost more: Angi's 2026 guide lists common types like Ubatuba at $30 to $60 per square foot and rarer types like Blue Louise at $70 to $100, with dark colors adding about $10 per square foot.
Finishes
Polished granite is the most common finish and the easiest to keep clean. Honed (matte) and leathered (textured) finishes cost more; Angi lists honed at $10 to $20 extra per square foot and leathered at $15 to $25. Honed surfaces show fingerprints and oils more readily, while leathered finishes hide crumbs and water spots well.
Sealing in a humid climate
Granite is a natural stone with some porosity, and how much varies by type. Dense, dark granites may rarely need sealing; lighter, more open stones absorb oils and water faster. HomeGuide notes that sealing frequency ranges from several times a year to once every ten years or more depending on the stone. A simple water test tells you when it is time: if a few drops darken the stone within several minutes, reseal. Chesapeake's humid summers do not hurt granite itself, but water left pooling at the back of the sink can work into unsealed stone and into the cabinet below, so a sound seal and a good caulk line at the backsplash matter.
Support and overhangs
Granite is heavy, and a 3 cm slab can crack if it spans an unsupported opening or a long overhang. Island seating overhangs beyond the usual limits need steel supports or corbels, and dishwasher openings need proper support rails. We check all of this at the estimate and include any supports in the quote.
Granite outdoors
Granite is also our first recommendation for outdoor kitchens in Chesapeake, because it handles sun and heat without fading. The outdoor kitchen countertops page covers that in more detail.
Replacing old granite
Removing granite takes care because it is heavy and can damage cabinets or walls if pried off carelessly. Angi lists removal and disposal at $4 to $7 per square foot. If you are keeping your cabinets, we check them for level once the old tops are off, since older installs sometimes relied on shims that have shifted.

We install, mount the sink, reconnect the faucet and seal as quoted.

Granite Countertops Questions
How much do granite countertops cost?
Angi's 2026 guide puts most granite projects at $2,000 to $4,000, and HomeGuide lists $80 to $150 per square foot installed on average. Rare or exotic stone can run much higher. We price your kitchen in writing after measuring.
How often does granite need to be sealed?
It depends on the stone. Some dense granites rarely need it and lighter, more porous ones need it more often. If water darkens the stone within a few minutes, it is time to reseal.
Is granite still a good choice compared with quartz?
Yes, especially if you cook a lot or want a one-of-a-kind look. Granite handles heat better than quartz; quartz needs less maintenance. Many homeowners pick based on looks once they understand that tradeoff.
Can granite crack?
It can if it is poorly supported, over-spanned or hit hard at an edge. Proper support under overhangs and dishwasher openings and level cabinets prevent most cracks.
