Counters That Can Live Outside
Outdoor kitchen countertops in Chesapeake face strong summer sun, high humidity, heavy rain and the occasional tropical storm. A surface that is perfect indoors can fail outside, so material choice comes first. We install granite and other outdoor-suitable surfaces on grill islands, patio bars and outdoor prep stations across the city.
Why granite is our first choice outside
Granite is natural stone, so there is no resin to fade or yellow in sunlight, and it handles the heat of a grill. Lawn Love's 2026 outdoor kitchen guide lists granite countertops at $65 to $75 per square foot, and describes granite as durable enough to stand up to the elements. Lighter colors stay cooler to the touch in direct sun than black or dark brown stone, which can get very hot on a July afternoon. A leathered or flamed finish also hides water spots and pollen better than a high polish.
Why most indoor quartz stays indoors
Standard engineered quartz contains resin that can discolor with long UV exposure. Caesarstone's residential warranty, for example, excludes outdoor installations and the company offers a separate outdoor product line with its own warranty. If you want a quartz look outside, ask about an outdoor-rated product, and check that the warranty actually covers outdoor use before ordering.
Other outdoor materials
- Concrete: $60 to $95 per square foot (Lawn Love) or $70 to $150 (Fixr). Fixr notes it needs a sealer reapplied one to two times a year to resist staining.
- Stainless steel: $75 to $100 per square foot (Lawn Love); heat-proof and sanitary, but it gets hot in sun and shows scratches.
- Tile: $6 to $50 per square foot (Lawn Love); inexpensive, but grout lines collect dirt and mildew in a humid climate.
- Quartzite: dense natural stone that handles sun and heat well, at a higher price.
Humidity, rain and storms
In a humid coastal climate the structure under the countertop matters as much as the top. Grill islands built from masonry, block or steel framing with cement board hold up; wood framing will rot. The top should overhang enough to shed water away from the island face, and cutouts for grills and side burners need proper clearances and insulated jackets per the appliance maker's instructions. Before hurricane season, secure loose covers and furniture around the outdoor kitchen; the stone itself stays put.
Sealing and care outdoors
Natural stone outside should be sealed and checked more often than indoor stone, since pollen, rain, grease and leaves land on it constantly. Clean with mild soap and water, rinse pollen off in spring, and reseal when water no longer beads on the surface. Covering the counter when not in use extends its life.
Gas, electrical and permits
Outdoor kitchens often need a gas line for the grill, outlets for a refrigerator or lighting, and sometimes a sink with supply and drain lines. Under Virginia's Uniform Statewide Building Code, new electric wiring and work on water supply and drain systems require permits, and gas piping is regulated by the code as well. We plan the countertop around the trade work and the permit timing, and list that work separately in the quote. Confirm the specifics with the City of Chesapeake's permits office.

Outdoor Kitchen Countertops Questions
What is the best countertop for an outdoor kitchen in Virginia?
Granite is a common choice because it handles sun, heat and humidity without fading. Quartzite and stainless steel also work. Light colors stay cooler in direct sun.
Can I use quartz outdoors?
Standard indoor quartz is not recommended outside, because UV can discolor the resin, and brands like Caesarstone exclude outdoor use from the indoor warranty. Some brands sell outdoor-rated products with separate warranties.
Do outdoor countertops need sealing?
Natural stone and concrete outdoors should be sealed, and checked more often than indoor stone. Fixr suggests resealing concrete one to two times a year.
Do I need a permit for an outdoor kitchen?
The countertop itself is not usually the issue. New gas piping, electric circuits and sink plumbing are regulated by Virginia's building code and generally need permits. Check with the City of Chesapeake for your project.
